    The Venice High volleyball team finished sixth in the Berkeley Premier on Saturday.

    After winning its pool with two victories Friday, the Indians went 1-2 in gold bracket play Saturday.

    Last year’s national champion Bishop Moore (Orlando) defeated Venice 25-23, 26-24 to open play Saturday. Hannah Richards had 10 kills and Gen Beaumier nine. Kiona McSwain dished off 26 assists.

    The Indians came back to defeat defending Class 6A champions Vanguard (Ocala) 19-25, 25-17, 25-18. Lexi Schnapf led with 17 kills and Lauren “LoLo” Mattmuller added 14.

    Venice closed with a 17-25, 25-16, 25-13 loss to Walton (Ga.), a three-time defending champ in Georgia’s 6A. Richards knocked down 12 kills and Mattmueller 11.

    The Indians opened Friday with wins over Plant (Tampa) 25-19, 25-19 and defending 8A champion Boca Raton 26-24, 17-25, 25-23 to win its pool.

    Richards had 13 kills against Boca Raton, the nation's No. 6 team.Beaumier and Mattmuller each had nine kills. Schnapf added eight kills and four blocks. McSwain finished with 40 assists.

    Mattmuller was named to the All-Tournament Team.

    Five of the past six teams the Indians have played are defending state champions, including Wednesday's foe Jensen Beach.

    Venice (7-4) returns to action with a district match Tuesday at Port Charlotte. The Indians also have home matches Wednesday against Riverview and Friday versus P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) at home.

    VENICE Venice High volleyball player Victoria Kaiser said she will attend Mars Hill College in North Carolina. The defensive specialist became the fourth of four Venice seniors sign to attend college. Taylor Jais is going to Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Holly Mattmuller will attend the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Danika Yoder is heading to Stetson University in DeLand.
